Matchy-matchy is not mushy-gushy {Review and Worldwide giveaway of Mama Shoppe}

I have a penchant for matching outfits since I was in my early twenties. While people were gawking at how mawkish it might have looked, I was just happy to stroll down the streets in matching wear with the boy. Thankfully, he did not mind it in the least and whenever we saw any cute t-shirts, we made sure we bought the same design in different sizes. In fact, we even wore matching pink polo shirts that said "She's my bee" and "He's my honey" at our wedding photoshoot.

Yes, I mean it. See, here we were back in 2008!

Yes, as you can see, the boy who was willing to wear matching shirts eventually became the man of my life.

After the kids came along, I had always dreamt of wearing mummy-daughter matching tops and dresses but finding them in reality can be a challenge. I don't like to spend a bomb on clothes and it really isn't easy trying to get matching outfits in sizes that fit a toddler, a preschooler and a mum.

When Mama Shoppe offered to send over outfits for the girls in our family, you bet the first thing I did was jump for joy and say "Woohoo! Now, we can be matchy-matchy when we go out!". Boys can now wear shirts in coordinating fabrics with Daddy and girls can be clad in matching dresses and tops as Mummy. How cool is that?

The special thing about clothing from Mama Shoppe is that they are handmade by a team of ladies from Emmaus Women's Centre in Cambodia - which provides food and lodging to the ladies and trains them in dressmaking and other skills. The centre seeks to equip ladies with livelihood skills so they will be able to find meaningful employment to support themselves and their families. Many of the them did not have the opportunity to receive formal education and would otherwise find it hard to make a living.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that the outfits came in cute and trendy designs, for instance Ariel is wearing the Peter & Jane Shortalls in Red Plaid and Angel is wearing Girl's Heart-back Top in Red Plaid.

The Peter & Jane Shortalls in Red Plaid is unisex and made of lightweight quality cotton. Even though Ariel had on a t-shirt underneath and we were out at the beach on a warm day, she still felt at ease enough to keep walking about and not once did she tug at her outfit or gave any sign of discomfort.

For the Girl's Heart-back Top in Red Plaid, I like the little surprise detail at the back - yes, the heart-cut out. It helps in cooling my girl on a hot day since she was born in winter in Sweden and till now, perspires very easily whenever we are out. She was also fascinated with the design and would go around telling everyone "Look! I have a heart on my back!" Even though this was a top, it matched well with a pair of leggings and I loved how the checked pattern stood out.

As for me, I had on the Ladies' Sierra Top in Red Plaid and for the first time was in matching wear with not one, but both my girls. I love how although our outfits were made of the same fabric, each piece had its own unique design and distinctive appeal which made all of us stand out in our own ways.

Floral dresses always look pretty on little girls. Here is Angel in the Girl's Braided Summer Dress in Floral Burst. I love the braided cross back straps and the green ruffles along the bottom edge which help to accentuate the vibrant colours of the dress.

For me, I am never one to go for floral tops, especially not one that comes with flutter sleeves. So initially, I was hesitant if I could pull off the look of this Ladies' Freya Top in Floral Burst. Yet, the moment I put it on and looked in the mirror, it looked surprisingly refreshing and got me thinking "It might just be time to ditch the plain tops for those with blooms".

I like that it can be paired with almost anything from shorts, skirts to jeans, so long as it is plain and does not take away attention from the beautiful top. Made of 100% cotton, these clothing ensure a comfortable fit and are perfect for our warm climate. Most importantly, they keep us smiling just knowing that we are dressed in similar fashion, both mummy and daughters.

Now, what is your take on wearing matchy-matchy outfits with your child?

  22. I love to wear matching outfits with Kaitlin even if it's just going by the same colour/pattern. It's fun plus she'll probably only do it with me for a few more years so better do it before it's to late.

  27. I haven't done any matching outfits for myself yet, but the hubby buys the LFC jerseys for everyone, including poor meimei who gets mistaken for a boy when she wears them (even though she wears pink pants and pink shoes??). Quite cute lah, but also it's practical because then the kids are easy to spot and people will know who the kids belong to! Maybe more handy for those with more kids. Hee!
