A magical all-girls evening {Review of Disney on Ice presents Treasure Trove}

One thing I love about Disney is that its magic lives on through the generations. You know, of all the Disney princesses, I loved Cinderella when I was a kid. Now, as a mother of two, my girls are just as enthralled by the glass slippers, fairy godmother and pumpkin carriage as I was. It’s like we might be born almost three decades apart, yet we are able to share the same childhood fantasy and be captivated by the same enchanting tale.

When we knew we were going to watch Disney on Ice presents Treasure Trove, I knew it was not just going to delight the girls, but it would be a night where I got transported back to my childhood days and relive those pure, magical memories once more.

This year, Disney on Ice skates into Singapore for 11 performances from 19 to 23 March 2014 with a magical medley of Disney tales spanning the years from the first animated film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, to the 50th film, Tangled.

It might have been a blessing in disguise that the hubby was unable to join us because it turned out to be a fun, girly night out with my sister-in-law, lovely niece and of course my precious daughters. Yes, a five-girls date with 50 of Disney’s most memorable characters! Before the show started, we psyched ourselves up by browsing through the booths filled with Disney merchandise and got the girls familiarized with not just their favourite, but some of the other classic characters that they might not know of.

It didn’t come as a surprise to see that the indoor stadium was nearly fully packed on this opening night. In fact, the ambience was awesome and not only were girls dressed up as their most loved princesses, everywhere I turned, there were big smiles on the faces of kids and their parents. We were lucky to be seated in the center and in fact, we were so close to the skating rink that we could clearly see all the action that was taking place and wave to every character who came up close.

I was impressed by how the entire performance seemed to flow effortlessly and how the classic Disney tales were retold in a brief yet engaging manner. What I particularly loved was that some of the kids in the audience (ok, just the very lucky ones) had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go on stage and interact with the characters, for instance, some got to sit in Alice in Wonderland’s giant teacup and another got to release a sky lantern with Rapunzel and Flynn Rider, much to Angel’s envy. Yes, she is a big fan of the long-haired princess and kept asking “When is Rapunzel coming?”, “Am I going to see Rapunzel?” and “Is it Rapunzel’s turn next?” until she finally saw the beautiful princess and gave a smile that was just as beautiful.

As for Ariel, I wasn’t sure if she would really enjoy the show but it turned out that she did. Immensely. There is something about costumed characters that fascinate every kid, right? For nearly the whole performance, which was close to two hours, she bounced up and down on my lap and pointed excitedly to every Disney character who came on stage. From Mickey Mouse to the animal entourage in Lion King to my personal favourite of the night – Little Mermaid, she loved them and she loved them all.

In fact, I think we were all a tad disappointed when the night ended with the finale and I was half tempted to shout encore as loud as I could. Well, I guess all good things might come to an end but the magic lives on forever.

Till next year's Disney on Ice where we shall relive the magic of Disney’s most cherished animated films all over again! Oh, please add in Elsa and Anna from Frozen too because all kids I know, yes I do mean all kids I know, adore them to bits!
