The special thing about daughters #1 - The kiss

Since it is my fate to have not one, but two girls in my life, I decided to start a series of posts named "The special thing about daughters". It could be a post about a funny girly conversation, it could be a special mother-daughter date, it could be a sweet note they wrote for me, or it could just be a heartfelt thought I have about being a mum to two extremely lovable, gorgeous, sweet and beautiful girls. Who sometimes drive me crazy by the way. Crazy as in not fanatical, but insane.

Today, the daughter I am speaking of is Angel, my first child and the one who always holds a special place in my heart.

If there are things I may or can forget to do each day, kissing my girl is not one of them. I love to kiss her the moment she wakes up, kiss her when I drop her at school, kiss her when I pick her up, kiss her good night, and kiss her at any time I just feel like giving love and being loved back.

I mean, she is just four now and she still does it willingly and lovingly. I kind of doubt she is going to like getting mushy with Mummy when she turns 14, which is why I actually dig the feeling of getting all these sweet, sometimes wet, kisses. There have already been occasions when I asked for a second kiss and she would say "But I already kissed you just now, right?" and I would have to act heartbroken before she would cave in and run to give me that one more kiss. Yes, ah huh, I do that.

So, I do cherish the times when I still have two little girls for me to hug and kiss at any moment of the day because they just seem to have the power to make all my mama tears, fears, worries and weariness go away.

Just the other night, we were lying in bed and after I made the little one doze off, I turned around so I could give the big one a tight hug and a kiss.

She gave me such a long, endearing and even a little mawkish kiss that was something more than the usual. Then, she even put her arms around my neck and started to tilt her face first to the left, then to the right and repeated it before she started to open her mouth a little. As much as I love kisses from her, it was all starting to feel a little strange and so I looked her in the eye and this was what followed.

Me: Ok, now tell me why did you do that?
Angel: Isn't this how people kiss?
Me: What do you mean?
Angel: We watched TV just now right? The boy and the girl kissed like that.
Me: (a little dumbfounded)...
Angel: And I saw. I saw. Their mouths were open when they kissed.. though I don't know why.

Right. It was time for a lesson about true love, Prince Charming, marriage and well, of course, kissing. We laid on the bed and had a long talk about how Daddy and Mummy came together, how we went on dates and decided to spend the rest of our lives together, how we got married, how we promised to stay true to each other and how love can be such a rare, unique and powerful thing on earth. Although I did not go into the technical aspects of kissing, I did tell her every kiss is as precious as a gem, that kisses for only meant for the people you truly love, and that for now, she can only feel free to plant mushy kisses on the Daddy, myself and meimei.

To be frank, I actually enjoyed the sort of girly talk we had, though for a moment, it was freaking me out to to think that one day my Princess would be leaving with her Prince and I would no longer be able to kiss her, feel her or be with her as much as I can now.

For the part on TV, ok I admit we do let her watch some grown up movies and drama serials because it would be unfair to watch Dora or Barney all the way when there are four grown-ups living under the same roof. But, for all we know, that boy-girl kiss she mentioned might turn out to be from a scene in Disney's Snow White. Or Tangled, which is her recent craze ever since I recorded it on Channel 5.

Anyway, for me, it is a realisation that as the older my girls grow, we are going to have different topics to talk about at bedtime and honestly, I am a little excited to think about what secrets we are going to share under the covers next time. That is, provided they don't think Mama is too old to talk about rainbows, castles and kisses.

And if there is anything I can wish for, I do hope that one day, hopefully not too soon for my liking, but just one day, my Princesses will be able to find their happily ever after.

Just like I did.

  6. Yes that would freak me out a bit too! Open mouth kisses are only acceptable from our children when they are babies (what we used to call a "goldfish kiss"!). But you turned it into a lovely moment to teach your daughter a valuable life lesson.

    1. Haha you are so right, goldfish kisses should happen only when they are this young. My 1 year old does it every time with a 'ahhhh' and I must say it is the sweetest thing! Thanks for hoping by, Janet!
